How to use external antennas with ESP32 modules for better WiFi and BLE range.
Practical checklist
- Use ESP32 modules with a real antenna connector or certified external antenna option.
- Do not connect an external antenna to a PCB antenna module unless the RF path supports it.
- Keep the antenna away from metal, batteries and displays.
- Respect regulatory limits for EIRP.
Installation notes
RF range depends on antenna position, enclosure material, cable loss, ground plane, mounting height and the final installation environment.
Testing advice
Measure RSSI, SNR, packet loss or throughput in the final product position. Bench tests often look better than real installations.
